Committee on Homeland Security Announces New Subcommittee Chairs

WASHINGTON - Rep. Bennie G. Thompson, Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, announced the selection of new subcommittee chairs for the Committee. The changes were made by the Democratic caucus of the Committee on Homeland Security and will be forwarded to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee. The new roster is below.

Congresswoman Richardson released the following statement with the announcement:

"The Homeland Security Committee was instituted after September 11, 2001 to provide security oversight and focus for our homeland, the United States of America. After the fiasco in New Orleans and the recent penetration of flight 253 this last Christmas, I stand ready in this vital capacity. As we face one of our most difficult tasks, ensuring there is confidence and protection in our homeland, I hope to bring the lessons of my district - ports, airports, water treatment and refineries - as examples of America's vulnerabilities and needs. I am thankful for the confidence that Chairman Thompson has shown in me as a member of the Committee and for making it possible for me to serve in this new capacity. I look forward to sharing my expertise to bring value and support the goals of the Chairman and the Homeland Security community."

Congressman Cuellar released the following statement regards to his new chairmanship:

"This unique mission of securing our nation’s borders and fighting terrorism is of particular importance to our nation and directly germane to my background as a native of our Nation’s southern border where some of the world’s busiest trade ports operate everyday. I thank Chairman Thompson for his faith in my ability to serve as the Chairman of the Border, Maritime and Global Counterterrorism Subcommittee as we confront those 21st Century threats and challenges posed throughout our country," said Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28). "With this opportunity, I can build upon my work with the Emergency Communications, Preparedness and Response Subcommittee where I’ve worked hard with FEMA and our nation’s first responders to better prepare our nation for national emergencies. Together, we can advance the homeland security initiatives that keep Americans safe and ensure our nation is stronger and more secure in the future."
